29th June saw 21 cars and their owners and friends head down to Power
Engineering in Uxbridge for a rolling road session.

Power Engineering built their reputation in the modified car business
with Ford Cosworths, but have more recently been right at the centre of
the Subaru Road Car scene as well as Mitsubishi. These days they work
on a spectrum of performance cars, providing everything from servicing
to modification work to serious performance projects.
Their facility has two areas, a workshop with several 4-post ramps and
a rolling road facility which is also used for set-ups by London Superchips.
It was nice to see a 940 first on the rollers at 8.30am, the only rear
wheel drive car of the day (except for the M3 and the Supra) which produced
a very tidy 153BHP at the flywheel.
We feasted upon Bacon Butties and Cakes very kindly supplied by Power
Engineering and Don Norchi of Kalmar Union. Tea and coffee flowed endlessly
- in fact the hospitality was second to none!
The day provided an excellent forum for ideas about modded volvos in general.
There were a wide range of enthusiasts there with different mods to show
& tell.
The rolling road action continued all the time, with all but a couple
of the cars present recording figures for the day. It was a good specatator
sport - seeing what each vehicle would put out, even if some found it
a little noisy....!
The cars kept coming and coming........
The technical highlight of the day was seeing Don Norchi's FIA spec S70
from Kalmar Union. Don has done a lot of work on this car, and both he,
and team mechanic Martin were on hand to see it run up.
And then it was mine..... having been superchipped and having had a straight-through
exhaust fitted the day before it was flying! Top speed on the rollers
was a little over the standard too...... as the red LED display indicated!
"Monster Great Big Lump of Quickness" was the technical term
applied, which is always nice after spending a couple of grand on mods...
The graph did show that the power was down a little at the top end because
the boost was leaking somewhat.... so bring on a cosworth actuator and
forge motorsport dump valve (done a week later) and hey presto!!
A power graph for my car can be found in the My
T5-R section of the website. A short table of results from the day
can be found below.
Thanks to Power Engineering, particularly to Merv, Chris, Ian who did
the testing, and to Rob. For further information about Power Engineering
